Wind Power Development Drives Demand for NdFeB

According to the new energy development plan, the global wind power installed capacity is expected to maintain a steady growth on the basis of 30GW, with a compound annual growth rate of about 5%-8%. It is estimated that by 2025, the global installed capacity will reach 45GW, and the newly installed capacity is expected to reach 100GW per year.

There are four main types of wind power generators at the current stage: asynchronous wind generators, doubly-fed asynchronous wind generators, semi-direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generators and direct-drive AC permanent magnet synchronous generators, of which asynchronous wind generators and double-fed asynchronous wind generators do not need to use neodymium iron boron permanent magnets, and semi-direct drive and direct drive AC permanent magnet synchronous motors need to use neodymium iron boron permanent magnets. Semi-direct-drive and direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous motors have a rapid increase in penetration rate due to easy maintenance.

In addition, direct-drive permanent magnet motors have certain advantages in large-scale wind turbines. In the future, with the large-scale unit, especially the rapid increase in the proportion of offshore wind power installed capacity, the market share of direct drive and semi-direct drive permanent magnet motors will also further increase. Global companies are accelerating the construction of direct drive and semi-direct drive production capacity. Representative large-scale direct-drive units are 6.7MW, 5MW, 6MW, and 6/7MW products; semi-direct-drive motors, representing large-scale units are 5MW/5.5MW, respectively , 5MW, 6.5MW/7.25MW, and 8MW products.

Direct drive and semi-direct drive AC permanent magnet synchronous motors consume about 0.67 tons/MW of NdFeB. The global wind power demand for NdFeB will reach 25,800 tons in 2020 and is expected to reach 30,150 tons in 2025.
